Kyisean Reed the Man the Legend the …..?

Posted in Player Profile on March 28, 2011 by marauderfanatic

Have you ever seen a 6’7  Basketball player eat Carne Asada Tacos? Well, I have and it’s pretty amazing! The tacos had no chance as they were just being taken out one at a time like Tic Tacs. I lost count of how many tacos Kyisean devoured that night but as I was watching him throw them down it reminded me of the day Kyisean and I first met…….

I first met Kyisean Reed February 28, 2009 right before AVC played at San Diego in an overtime loss. I remember asking him before the game, ” Hey Reed, are you gonna get us 8 blocks tonight ?” While laughing he replied, ” Ite .” He then just walked away and I remember feeling like he just shun me on. I never spoke to Kyisean again that year and I never wanted to. At the time I thought he was a rude and overrated basketball jock (at the time that was the image I had of him due to the one second conversation we shared). I didn’t speak to Kyisean again till the end of the 2010 season as I started to see him around campus and in the gym. I remember going up to him and telling him that the gym was open at night if he wanted to come and get some jumpers in. He replied with his famous word, ” Ite.” About a week later he showed up in the Gym around 10 pm and began shooting jumpers. Little by little we got to know each other and the assumption I had of him the year before began to fade. He was then coming over every night and he would walk around with me while I worked and kept me company. We developed a close Big brother to little brother relationship ( even though he’s 6’7 and I’m a mere 5’11 ). A close bond that we presently share and to think it could have all never happened if I pre-judged him from our first encounter.

Kyisean Reed ain’t perfect but if you were to ask him he’ll tell you the opposite. His optimism of himself can easily be mistaken for arrogance. In Kyisean’s case I like to call it CONFIDENCE. According to Kyisean no one can stop him. In the case of the 2010-11 AVC Basketball Season no one could. He was dominate all season long until he finally met his match. Kyisean made a little mistake off the court that turned into a huge loss for the Marauders season and stopped Kyisean right in his tracks.

Following an easy victory at College of the Desert Kyisean and a fellow teammate made a huge mistake that would later haunt them for the rest of the season and could have easily been the blame for the lackluster play AVC produced in the playoffs.  On January 26th 2011 Kyisean decided not to get on the team bus like he was supposed to and instead got in a car with a friend and headed  to who knows where. Kyisean was later dismissed from the team and never got to finish his Sophomore campaign. Speculation and controversy followed Kyisean and AVC the rest of the season. Kyisean’s name was in the midst of all the negativity and he  began to lose respect as a basketball player and most of all as a person. When you lose a player like Kyisean it’s like losing your Pro Bowl QB. He means so much to a team because of his great offensive ability and his presence inside to alter opposing shots. When AVC lost Kyisean for the season , not only did they lose a teammate but they also lost chemistry. On the other hand Kyisean lost his Sophomore year and many AVC fans.

Marauders 2010-11

When Kyisean finally finished every crumb off of his plate, I sat with him and asked him to answer some personal and not so personal questions for this interview and this is what we got……..

MFanatic – What the Hell were you thinking?
KReed – I wasn’t really thinking about what would happen after. I was thinking in the moment.
MFanatic – Did you think your actions would get you kicked off the team?
KReed – No! I didn’t think it was warranted.
MFanatic – If you could go back in time what would you do differently?
KReed - I wouldn’t go, I wouldn’t have gotten in the car.
MFanatic – What have you learned from this mistake?
KReed – Life isn’t always fair.
MFanatic – Do you feel you let your teammates down?
KReed – I feel like I let certain people down.
MFanatic – How much of a difference would the season had gone for AVC if you played the whole season?
KReed – I believed we would have beaten Citrus, Chaffey, Irvine Valley, Fresno City and then won the State Tournament and beat San Francisco. That’s my opinion!
MFanatic – Are you a better person now then when you first arrived at AVC? Why?
KReed – Yes. My experience at AVC has taught me that everyday I have to approach basketball and school like it’s a business.
MFanatic – What will you take to Utah St. that you got from AVC?
KReed – The one thing that I have learned is that the people outside of the team just don’t know what’s really going on. For example when I first got here my freshman year I was told that I was not good enough to play and I was told to red-shirt. Then my second year I did red-shirt and everyone started to say negative things about me like I was a bad guy and a waste of talent. Then this year I was rated the top player in California. I learned to just take people’s words in stride and go about my business.
MFanatic – What can you say to the Marauders fans about you that you have always wanted to say?
KReed – To those who have supported me through all my years here I would like to say THANK YOU for all you’re support and not giving up on me when things were bad.
MFanatic – In one word describe each of your teammates.
KReed – Gomez- Rondo, Bennett- V Wafer, Logan- J’LO, McGrew- G-Money, Winfield- GQ, Cole- Chuck-Diesel, Herrera- J’s, Thompson- DrakeHead, JJ- J Crawford, Bridges- Ludacris,  Boykins- ???, Slaughter- Slinky….
MFanatic – What advice can you give to the upcoming Freshman Marauders?
KReed - First of all take care of school work first it’s your education not someone else’s. Second, if you are a basketball player you better be prepared to bring it every game, practice and every workout because this is no longer high school.
MFanatic – If  I was the Head Coach at Utah St. should I be concerned?
KReed - Yes and No, I would say Yes for how I handled the situation and No for the environment that I’m in. In Utah I won’t have the same distractions.
MFanatic – If you could say something to the AGGIE fans about yourself, what would you say?
KReed - Hope there ready for a great 2 years!
MFanatic – What are you gonna bring to Utah St.
KReed – In terms of basketball I’m going to bring the one thing I know how to do and that’s play like #34 Kyisean Reed. As a student and person I’m going to excel further then I will in basketball.
MFanatic – What product would you endorse right now if you were a pro?
KReed – I would love to do an All State Insurance promo with the MAYHEM guy. I would also like to do a commercial or promo with Shaun White.
MFanatic – When people initially meet you why do you think people get the wrong impression of you?
KReed – I think it’s just because I don’t trust everybody and with a lot of people it usually seems they have a different agenda rather than trying to get to know me. They assume I’m like any other player or person and in my eyes you are the company you keep. So if I don’t think you’re a good person I stay away from you. To a lot of people my first year at AVC I may have come across as a jerk or arrogant person but I’m really just a guy who loves to play basketball and enjoys having fun.
MFanatic – If you didn’t play basketball what other sport would you be playing and why?
KReed – FOOTBALL! Without a question! Football is my first affair and Basketball is my first love.
MFanatic – What position would you play and why?
KReed – Wide Receiver and Free Safety! Wide Receiver because I’ve got hands and athleticism and Free Safety because I can hit hard and I have great anticipation.
MFanatic – If a movie was made about your life what actor would you like to portray you?
KReed – Will Smith!
MFanatic – What NBA Player most resembles your game?
KReed – A mix of George “Ice Man” Gervin and Stacy Augmon!
MFanatic - If you were a boxer what song would you come out to?
KReed - Eye of the Tiger!
MFanatic - What was your most embarrassing moment as a basketball player?
KReed - When I was in middle school, I had just came into the game and my shorts were to big. I was running around holding my shorts with one hand. I kept telling my teammates not to pass me the ball and lo and behold someone passed me the ball. My natural instincts was to put both my hands up. I let go of my shorts! You could imagine the rest.

As a fan and friend of Kyisean I may have a bias opinion on him but if you were to get to know him the way I have you would feel the same way too. This interview was not written to boast Kyisean in any way but to give people a better understanding of who Kyisean is and I hope we accomplished that.

The Soft Side of Mr. Reed

Freshmen to Sophomores

Posted in AVC Men's Basketball on March 18, 2011 by marauderfanatic

From Freshmen to Sophomores! AVC may have a boat load of new players coming in to fill out some roster spots but we also have 4 new Sophomores that plan on leading these new Marauders to the promise land.

PG CHRIS BRIDGES – A wide and strong PG with a nice jump shot. Needs to get into better shape.

SG JASON JOHNSON – Can shoot the 3 lights out and can create own shot off the dribble. Needs to improve his DEFENSE.

SG MARTIN THOMPSON – A very streaky 3 point shooter. Plays with a lot of emotion and when on the court gives 110%. Needs to be a little more selfish and shoot the open looks.

SF SHELTON BOYKIN JR - A Phenom with loads of talent. Nice jump shot and tons of athletic ability. Needs to control emotions on and off court. Needs to improve DEFENSE!!!!

As Marauder fans we are very thankful to have these very talented and athletic players returning to AVC. Hopefully they will lead us past the second round of the playoffs. GO MARAUDERS!
